What Students in the Gifted Program Are Doing
Inadvertent omission. Many apologies. Andrea L., Gr. 9, whose name was not included, along with Emma W.,Gr.9, was part of the junior team that won the provincial debating championships as mentioned in the last newsletter.
In the provincial debating championships help on March 24, Sarah L., Gr. 10, came in 11th and Cristina C.i, Gr. 12, came in 17th out of 60 debaters from across Ontario. They were treated to an almost all-expenses-paid weekend in Kitchener and had a great time.Congrats! Wait till next year.
Sabrina S., Gr. 12, applied to be a student trustee with our school board. Let us know if you get the job.
Alexis C., Gr. 10, will be our school representative going to the free Hugh O’Brian Leadership Training Seminar for a weekend this month. Alexis and Allison M., Gr. 10, will be presenting at the Elementary Gifted Conference (topic: Stress Control).
Jennifer H., OAC, wrote the Mathematical Association of America Math Competition. Very hard. Hope you do well.
Talia L., OAC, is going to California for a WEEKEND with a dance group she belongs to. At the end of May, she will be going into hospital for some surgery. How about offering her some support. We are hoping for success and a full recovery. Good luck. Our prayers go out to you as well.
Angela P., Gr. 9, is interested in hearing from anybody that knows about leadership training opportunities. There are many of you that can help her out.
Janice C., Gr. 11, has really been revving her engines this year and is about to take off in some interesting directions with regard to writing. She got three of her articles published in the LA Times and had a letter in the North York Mirror about the Seneca College Minkler Auditorium closing. She has also been investigating other ways of getting published.
Alicia E., Gr. 12, attended the Rotary Club of Toronto Camp Enterprise in early April. The free live-in weekend included: guest speakers, workshops and contact with many successful business people. Two other students from the school attended: Grace S. and Michelle P. Last year, Aimee O., Charysse R. and Maria I. (all OAC) went.
Cristina C., Gr. 12,entered the OECTA writing contest and her teacher decided to enter her work into some other contests too. She is also in French Public Speaking. Emma W., Gr. 9, will be joining Christina and they will be presenters at the Elementary Gifted Conference.
Valerie P., OAC, as school council president has been doing an amazing job of spirit development. Cheers to her.
Ashley S. has pinned down a summer volunteer job with the Children’s Museum.
Michelle L., OAC, this year has been involved in: directing a play, being an assistant to two teachers, being an extra in movies, and has a contract to do computer work for a company. Whew!!
Carolyn M., OAC, just got a $4000 Millenium Scholarship.

You can't take your time but have to answer immediately. OK?
Let's find out just how clever you really are.
Ready?

First Question:
You are participating in a race. You overtake the person in second place and then everybody crosses the finish line to end the race. What position did you finish?

If you think that you arrived first, then you are absolutely wrong!!! Because you overtake the second and take his/her place, you arrive second!!!
To answer the second question don't take as much time as you took for the first question.
Second Question (on the ball this time, ok?)
If you overtake the last runner, then you arrive...?

Answer: If you think that you arrived second last then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST?
>The question is wrong! You're not very good at this are you?
>
Third Question
Subject: Very, very tricky math!
Note: This riddle must be done IN YOUR HEAD ONLY and NOT
using paper and a pen, or else.
Take 1000 and add 40 to it.
Now add another 1000.
Now add 30.
Add another 1000.
Now add 20.
Now add another 1000.
Now add 10.
What is the total? (Scroll down for the answer)

Did you get 5000? You are absolutely…………………………………………….WRONG!
The correct answer is actually 4100. Don' t believe it? Check it with your calculator!
The decimal sequence confuses our brain that always jumps to the highest decimals (100s instead of 10s).
Hah! Gifted, eh???
That should put you in a bad mood for the rest of the day!
(Editor’s Note: Please absolve me of all wrongdoing with regard to the above questions. Continue to love and support me as I love and support you – despite a warped, perverted attempt at cheaply tricking you and degrading your frail psyches by asking such nasty, disgustingly ego-corrosive, inane questions that are so far beneath any level of intelligence and contempt that a snake…… oh, ah, sorry,………bye L
Until next time. Au revoir.
